After lots of searching, we found this MP3 player on amazon for about 150 quid, which has turned out to be invaluble and rather robust!

We left the UK with 80 gig of music, video, photos of friends and family, digital copies of our passports, tickets and important documents all cleverly encrypted away from prying eyes. It comes with a ‘USB Host lead’ which means, when our digital cameras full, we can dump the photos on the device and start taking more, all without the need of searching for a computer.

Due to the nature of how we’ve been travelling, it’s had a hard life, even getting soaked through (invest in a waterproof case) and although I’m sure the warranties now void, the metal case scratched and dented, it’s still going strong (touch wood)

Its been great, entertaining us on wet evenings and listening to music in the car when radio stations can’t be found.

My Terra Nova Ultra Quasar has its first birthday! (of use)

Thats 365 (ish) nights of use! Bought in 2000. Its first birthday was spent on a beach during a kayaking tour of Abel Tasman National Park.

Its been up mountains, sat on wind blown scenery, dug in on beaches during wintry offshore winds, crammed with too many people during near death experiences (thats 5! you try it), and just had a fab time during the calm of family camp sites.

Its been sewn, patched, resealed, re-elasticized, cleaned by many immigration departments, poles broken and fixed. But other than maintenance due to excessive use (and Becky)… still going strong.

So thank you Terra Nova for sheltering us from the elements, here is to another year!

Clothes: Rohan Expedition Shirt

The last thing I did before we left was went clothes shopping, never too keen to spend money, these shirts were 45quid each and took some convincing to buy them, but i’m already glad I did.

I bought 2, one short sleeved, and one long sleeved (with buttons so you can role them into short sleeves). They’re full of innovation, secret pockets, little clips so you don’t need pegs (excilent idea).
They can be washed, dried and worn again in hours, will update this post at the end of the trip to tell you if they lasted, if they do, they are so worth 50 quid.

Water Filter: MSR MiniWorks

We’ve used this filter over the past few years on Dartmoor, its proven to be very hard to break, the one time I did, I was able to take it apart and clean it, its very field maintainable.
We will be taking it with us so we can provide our own safe water.

Reasonably cheep per litre cost with little effort.

I’ve had this bag for many years, Its done me well, duarble (its got a small hole but the gaffa tapes holding), great back system.
Its done well for all its uses, dartmoor, the alps, treking, moving house, the list goes on and on, and so does the bag, got to be coming up to its 10th birthday…

Pros: Durable, Floating Lid so you can fit more in
Cons: A little on the heavy side when empty

Sleeping Bag: Mountain Hardwear Fairview

We wanted some lightweight summer sleeping bags, our UK Bags are far too warm for the job, so after a bit of a search we bought a couple of these. There simple, lightly cut and light, zip together. We bought them specificy for this trip but will be ok for an English summer. Good down to +4 oC.

Tent: Terra Nova – Ultra Quasar

Everyone needs somewhere to sleep and this is my favourite tent in the world so I donâ€™t have anything bad to say about it, granted, anyone who knows about tents knows its a little over the top for the warm breezy weather we’ll be camping in, but maybe, just maybe we’ll hike off into the mountains in New Zealand and I’ll be glad I had it with me…

The Ultra Quasar is an Industry Leader, A 4/5 Season Tent that can withstand anything you can throw at it (time will tell if it can withstand Becky, my Voyager couldn’t). It will fit 2 people very comfortably, we’ve had 5 in there for a night on Dartmoor but that was very stupid, it has 2 porches, good for storage, what more can I say.

Pros: All of it!
Cons: The price…
